Many people are affected by depression in some form or another. This disorder can affect a person at one point in his or her life, but for some it can be a life long struggle. Regardless of how or why one is suffering from depression, it is often a good idea to seek professional help in order to combat this disorder. Several symptoms that are associated with depression are as follows:
- Depressed mood most of the day
- Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day
- Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain
- Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day
- Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt
- Diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness
- Low self-esteem

There are various diagnoses used to identify a person’s specific depressive disorder. Below is a list of these disorders also taken from the DSM-5.
- Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
- Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
By first identifying which depressive disorder fits your symptoms helps in terms of then deciding on which treatment options will best suit your needs.
It is also important to evaluate your level, if one is present, of suicidal thoughts. Suicide can present itself with a wide range of disorders, but is even more common when an individual is struggling with a depressive disorder.
